  1. If you go north of El Calafate there are lots of beautiful mountain lakes with great picnic locations along the shores.  They are gorgeous and have incredibly clear water, but be warned, if you want to take a swim the water is chilling.

  2. You'll love Perito Moreno. Calafate is a small town, you have a few restos and bars, then the viewing is between 2 hs and more from there. Not only you can visit the Glaciar Perito Moreno but also do a Lago Argentino visit, it's on a ferry, it's about 5hs sailing and you get to see two of the biggest glaciers Upsala/Spegatzini, and then you go and have a 'pic-nic' on a beautiful bay.

Enjoy your trip! And eat  'cordero' (lamb) in Calafate, don't miss it!!!!!

  3. There is a picturesque location nearby, Chalten, in a beautiful valley near Fitz Roy mountain, with skyscraper shaped peaks.

If you dare to make some 700 kms. north, towards the boundaries with Chubut province, you will find an endless string of  lakes, glaciers, woods and streams, a landscape certainly worth of visiting.
