  1. On the chalkboard, write out the kids' responses to these questions:

In the past week, what have you done to help others in deed and word?

In the past week, what have you done to hurt others in deed or word?

(Encourage them to include online activities-- nasty postings, stealing/illegally downloading music, looking at sites they're not supposed to, etc.)

    DISCUSSION

How could you have turned your hurtful actions into a helpful one?

What are other ways not listed we can hurt/help other people in small and big ways?

The Olympics are going on now, symbolizing international solidarity and tolerance.  How does the coming together of various races, religions, creeds and colours forward [your church's] tenets?

Is there any way to bring that ideology into our every day lives?

Ask the kids to find/quote appropriate Bible verse if they can to support or refute.

Teens would be SO bored with "honesty", "kindness", etc., questions, so ignore the finger-wagging, nasty-minded other poster.  Maybe you only got the call to fill in this morning because the regular teacher was sick.  Good for you for stepping up, and for reaching out.

  2. Well, now's a hellofa time to ask, isn't it?

You could talk about any one of the following:

    honesty, what is it?

    kindness, what is it?

What is meant by, "do unto others...?"

When Jesus said to love your neighbor as yourself, who is your neighbor?

Do 'little white lies' count?  Or are they okay sometimes?

If you talk about any one of the above, though, I suggest that you, yourself, know the answers...

You are doing these kids such a disservice by not having prepared.  They're going to know that you're fumbling around for something to say.

I suggest next time you're asked to fill in that you say "no" unless you have the time, the energy, the real desire, and the integrity to prepare for a lesson that will challenge young minds.   I suspect that you said "yes" to this project because you didn't have the gumption to say "no."

You're cheating these kids.  Such a shame to lose such a precious opportunity.
