I recommend checking out Ron Sexsmith.  He writes the most beautiful love songs, but they are not cheesy, just really honest love songs.  And they aren't all super slow songs, some are really folk-y (NOT country) and upbeat.

My fiance and I have gone to see Ron Sexsmith 3 times in concert, and our first dance song will be "Fallen" by Ron Sexsmith.
