Know anything about hermit crabs?

My children have three hermit crabs in a combined cage that we've had for about 6 months. Yesterday, my daughter said her crab had died. After they removed it from the shell, they found another small crab inside the same shell. What's happened?

  1. There should always be plenty of extra shells in the cage.  Hermit crabs will out grow a shell and will need to move into another one larger.  They will also move into another shell that has a crab in it already.  Most of the time they will take them out.  The one in the shell must have been too small for the shell he was in.  Always supply the same size shell and some that are larger.  If they don't have a shell to move into they will die.

  2. would this place help???

  3. you didn't have any shells that the hermit crabs can move into

after they had out grown them so another hermit crab moved into another hermit crabs shell because it out grew it's old one so that's probably the cause of the hermit crabs death

  4. Apparentely, the one who had died didn't notice there was someone else inside the shell, so he just went inside! You always have to have available shells for them to move into. I'm not trying to yell at you, sweet heart. I am SO sorry that one died =[. I cried like a hose when mine died.

  5. It moved! I had hermit crabs once and if they grow out of their shell, or just see another they like they will crawl out of their shell and move into another! It amazes me, their intresting little creatures. I don't know if it died or not though, or maybe gave birth. I'm not to into hermit crab information... : P
