I have a dun with a tendency towards a dry coat, brittle mane and cracked hooves. I'm on a tight budget, but if you know of something inexpensive that works well please tell me!

  1. Rain maker is an awesome hoof conditioner also and good to use after baths. keeps them from flaking and they always look nice but will get a lot of dust stuck to them.

  2. Mega-Tek is supposed to be good for this type of problem.

    Mega-Tek Rebuilder:

  3. I use mane N tail, it works great... and as far as the hooves go, I would recomend letting a farriar take care of that, also if you ask a vet, they can give you many subscriptions on what to give your horse

  4. I also have a dun with four white hooves and we have a similar problem. We started feeding her flax seed meal and it has helped tremendously. It has to be refridgerated though because it can go rancid in the heat. We buy it in an 8 pound bucket for $14.95 and you feed 2 ounces a day. So a bucket lasts us about 2 months for her. You can also use wheat germ oil for similar results. I have tried both and had better results with the flax seed. Just be careful to follow the directions because you don't want to over supplement one if you a feeding high protein feed.

For all the symptoms you described it needs to be treated from the inside out. She has a nutritional deficiency that is causing all of those issues. We also use a hoof conditioner on her feet when it gets REAL dry here to help with the hoof cracking.

  5. WOW your horse sounds like mine! He was like a drought horse. lol These are what I use:

Mane And Tail: Aussie Conditioner for people the mosit kind-they have it at walmart for 6bucks- And for the shampoo I use mane and tail shampoo(local Feed Store no more thabn 5$) You can also make a half water and half Aussie conditiong spritz to use before and after ride to keep tail soft.

    Coat- Any iodine shampoo

Hooves- I would start by wetting her feet just a little, but not too much because then they will crack worse, you can also use farrier magic if you are not comfortable with water.

Hope this helps! It does fo rmy horses=)
