  1. Hey,

Try reading books by the author Charles Dickens he seems to meet your criteria and is very good, I can't name a pacific book because they are all excellent :)

  2. Middle March, George Eliot.

Not what you except, unlike Jane Austen when things go to h**l they actually are bad (something like Wuthering Heights, but less because of stupidity).  Especially deals with the "upper rung" unlike Dickens who generally dealt with more middle class issues. I think that it is more memorable and interesting of a read, however you have to trudge through the first 400 pages for it to actually get good, just to warn you.

Oh, I just finished Adam Bede by George Eliot as well and that was also good, but more middle class/working class.

  3. Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskhill

    Jane Eyre

    Vanity Fair

    Pride and Prejudice

    Emma

  4. Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray is a good book from that time and is set in the upper classes. It has a lot of humour and some good characters. But it is a very long book. If you like books that have a bit more action and adventure you could try the Horatio Hornblower books by C.S.Forester. They are adventure stories of the navy and very enjoyable to read.

  5. hmm what about The Mill On The Floss by George Eliot

    its really touching

a family matter thing  about a brother and a sister
