When going into the Navy: If a person is fluent in another language, like Italian, does that mean it is likely that you can get sent to a Naval base in Italy? If a person knows Italian, does that change anything for them when it comes to jobs in the Navy? Thankx!

  1. In the Marines (I'm not sure if it is the same for the navy), speaking a language fluently gets you extra pay and has no effect on where you are stationed or what job you do.

A friend of mine speaks Korean, is paid a great sum of money each payday for his ability to speak Korean and works on planes. Whenever they need a translator in Korea they call on him and he goes to help and then comes back.

  2. For any foreign language you know proficiently, you get paid extra money.  It opens up options for you to POSSIBLY be assigned to an intellegence unit to listen to conversations and translate.  HOWEVER, Italian...  not a big concern for terrorism activities.  Report it so you can get the extra pay, but even if you get to be staionted in Italy, you won't stay for your entire enlistment period.  If this is your "way out of Iraq", it's NOT a good one.

  3. Nope. Italian won't matter. If you knew some language for the middle east or turkish it might be different. But they don't really care about spanish and italian and french. The common ones don't matter... Plus, the base in italy is closing

  4. language ability has zero bearing unless you are a CTI.

  5. No.  It will have no effect at all. You'll go where the needs of the navy dictate.

I had a good friend who spoke, read and wrote in perfect Hungarian.  He spent his entire career with me in the Pacific Fleet.

  6. Besides, I don't think we have a large military presence in Italy.

Maybe some at the embassy, but no more than that.
