Question:

Knowledge of non-profit organizations...?

I applied for an office clerk position for a non profit organization (With a staffing company) and in the field where it states the skills/requirements/qualifications it says, "Knowledge of non-profit organizations a plus."

Can anyone tell me what knowledge would be ideal to know? Or what the basics are? I'm not even sure what kind of company it is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

  1. All nonprofit work is mission-based -- they can make a profit, but that profit has to go back into the organization; it can't be paid to the board of directors (who are all unpaid volunteers) and it can't be divided up among staff as profit sharing. Nonprofit record-keeping is crucial -- they need to have an excellent record of expenditures and income, that can easily be reviewed by the board or auditors. Nonprofits need to be able to say how many people they have served, what impact they have had in a community, and why the organization matters. Nonprofits usually don't have the resources of a for-profit business -- they usually have to hold on to computers a few more years than for-profit businesses before they can upgrade, a staff member usually has a dual role (he or she may be the volunteer manager *and* the IT support person), and they often have to get services donated, such as printing, in order to have them at all.

  2. a non profit org is a company that are either a charity who's sole purpose is to make money to donate to its said charity base or a private company that put any profit they make from operating back into the company, its staff etc. for example if a care home was a non profit organization any profit made in the year would be put back into the company either to the people in the care home (such as holidays, residents funds, refurbishments, new equipment etc) or into to its staff (such as staff bonuses, training programs, new equipment etc)

    hope this helps
