Knox and Mahan share the first round lead at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
Russell Knox fired a six-under par 64, in the opening round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, to share the lead with Hunter Mahan, on Thursday, February 7, 2013.
The tournament is being staged at three different courses, which includes Pebble Beach Golf Links, the Spyglass Hill Golf Course and the Monterey Peninsula Shore Course.
Knox, who played his opening round at the Monterey Peninsula Shore Course, started his campaign on the back nine of the course and birdied the 11th and the 12th hole, to mark a strong start.
He then lost a shot on the 14th hole, prior to adding another two shots to his scorecard, by recording birdies on the 15th and the 16th hole.
The front nine of the course witnessed him making start with a bogey on the first hole that he played. Thereafter, he made a strong comeback by birdying four of the next seven holes that he played.
Talking to the reporters after completing his round, he expressed his pleasure in marking a strong start to his campaign at Pebble Beach.
“I came in here with a lot of confidence because I feel like I've been playing very well,” Knox said. “Just haven't had the chance to play. It was nice to get off to a good start”.
Mahan, in the meantime, played his round at the Pebble Beach Golf Links. He got off to a splendid start, as he birdied five of the first seven holes that he played. After recording par putts on the eighth and the ninth hole, he reached the turn in five under.
The back nine of the course witnessed him draining two birdie putts, while losing a shot on the 17th hole, when he conceded a bogey four.
At the end of his round, he talked to the reporters and said that the most interesting part of the day was when the rain started falling at the course.
“I had a good time with my partner. The pace was great. The weather was good,” he said. “I think the most interesting thing was we had perfect weather when it was supposed to rain at noon. We were all expecting rain. The bag probably weighs 100 pounds right
now”.
