  1. In the 1960's and 1970's I did at least 50 a day (one set) done 6 to 7 days a week. Sometimes I'd do 2 sets of 50.   After many years I began to question why I needed to do them at all and if they were of any use other than to build my own ego.....????  After much thought, research and just applying common sense, I decided to stop doing them all together.   Now looking back I see no need to do them and feel that they may do as much harm as good.

    My reasoning is simple:

    1) After years I began to have problems with my hands that I believe was caused by knuckle push-ups.

    2)  I realized that they have nothing to do with punching well or hard.

    3) I have come to believe that knuckle push-ups were introduced by oriental instructors for two purposes.

    A) To weed out students that were not serious.

    B) To occupy time during training in order to limit how much time was left to teach the important things.

(Remember: many of the martial arts were brought to the U.S.A. by American military men at the end of WWII. It is my belief that in the early years, and to some extent now, that the Japanese did not want to share their fighting arts with those that had just defeated them and occupied their homeland. Would You ????)

Although the above are just my take on the subject. I believe that I'm at least partially correct in my beliefs. At 54 years old I can hit harder now than I ever did when I was doing all kinds of push-ups and all kinds of other strength training.   Also the problems I was having with my hands has gone away since I quit knuckle push-ups.

Best suggestion I can give is to simply practice punching if you want to improve your punches.

  2. I'll have to give that a shot and find out

  3. I agree do two sets of 50, but try this; set up two dumbells so the stand up do push ups with your hands on these, go all the way down, these are my favorite.  Make sure u go all the way to the floor.

  4. Well that's good, if you can do more then keep trying, try and beat your record every time. Also another trick to see how many you can do in a minute. Then try again.

  5. go for  100 push ups

  6. Hey not bad, try this one out for size. Grab two sticks that can suppport your weight. grip them close to the bottom, thumb facing the bottom. Place the sticks on the ground instead of your hands, your hands should only be elevated an inch or two off the ground (the only thing that should be touch the ground is the sticks and the balls of your feet). Now do ONE push up. If you can do One without falling write back.

  7. THATS VERY GOOD 52 IF U ARE DOING LIKE U SAID CHEST ON THE FLOOR THEY ARE THE TOUGHEST FORM OF PRESS UPS HAVE YOU TRIED THE BUTTERFLY PRESS UP THEY ARE DEADLY I CAN DO 25 TO A SET THEN A BREATHER THEN ANOTHER 25

  8. No, no knuckle pushups for me.

    I don't feel the need.

  9. go for 120 or make your 52 push ups repeted. meaning do one rep and wait 30 sec then do another 50 and work down until you get to one

  10. no idea but!

can you do knuckles then clap in between then fall back onto knuckles...?

if you can do that try doing it on the backs of your hands.

    OUCH!!

  11. hahaha good one jimmy

i may try that one out...

i usually do all of my pushups(diamonds, knuckle, reg) in sets of 35-45.

I honestly dont know how many if i maxed out, bc sometimes your body can hit a wall and sometimes you are just in the zone...id guess around 65-70 though....

  12. I can do 5 sets of twenty.   So why do you ask?

Who cares? My Sifu does 100 non stop.
