Ko Sung Hyun and Lee Yong Dae win Men’s Doubles title at the 2011 US Open GP Gold
Korea’s Ko Sung Hyun and Lee Yong Dae secured the Men’s Doubles crown after crushing USA’s Howard Bach and Tony Gunawan in the title match of the 2011 US Open GP Gold, in Orange, California, on Saturday, July 16.
The fifth seeded Korean duo showed no mercy to their local opponents in the final match and clinched the title by spending only 27 minutes in the court. They finished-off the match in two games without facing much resistance from Bach and Gunawan, who were
the seventh seed in the Men’s Doubles draw in the tournament.
The start of the match was quite favourable for the Koreans, as they smoothly progressed in the first-half by facing no resistance from the local shuttlers. Bach and Gunawan failed to match with the speed of the game, as their control at the net was not
impressive because of the fast pace used by their challengers.
The Korean pair was controlling the bird at the net very effectively and their blocking in the front-court area was also impressive, as they never missed to score a point from any weak return. Until the interval, the Koreans successfully established a wonderful
difference of 11-4.
After the break, Sung Hyun and Yong Dae continued their incredible run in the first set against their shaky rivals, who were unable to play good badminton. The Koreans won the opening game without any hassle by a huge margin of 21-9, in just 12 minutes.
The second set of this title match between the Korean and American duo was very interesting for the crowd, as both pairs put up a good show of top-class badminton. The local shuttlers tried to put pressure on their opponents, as Tony started to cover the
net area by moving incredibly fast.
However, at the concluding phase of the game, the Koreans played positively from all areas of the court by keeping the pace at the highest level. They finished-off the set in 16 minutes with a small margin of 21-19. The final match ended in 27 minutes with
the score of 21-9 and 21-19.
