Ko comes second in the US Women's Amateur Qualifying Stage
Lydia Ko finished second in the qualifying stage of US Women's Amateur.
Ko led the first round with a score of 66. When the round finished, Ko was leading with a margin of two strokes. It appeared at that point that Ko will finish the event in the first place without much trouble from her rivals.
However, the second round saw her slipping enough to give away her advantage. The final results of the stage indicated that Ko was one stroke behind the South Korean player Hyo-Joo Kim.
This time, Ko even missed the medallist honour which went to the South Korean player. Kim played brilliantly and finished the event with an eight under-par 136.
However, Ko was not the only well known player who was superseded by Kim. The third place was shared by two well known amateurs. Alison Lee and the Thai sensation Ariya Jutanugarn both shot 139 points for the third place.
Many analysts were surprised by the way Ko finished the second round. She had played well in the first round and finished the round with a lead that appeared to be enough for the first place after the second round.
The cause of the performance was pinned to her putting. She putted very well in the first round but the second round saw her struggling with the strokes.
Ko, herself came to this conclusion and in an after match chat, she said, “If I'd putted as well as yesterday, I would have been seven or eight strokes better”.
Ko is very confident that this was just a hiccup on her road to success. She came to the Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio, the venue of the qualifying stage, with a winning attitude.
She commented, “Last year I was medallist and lost in the second round, so hopefully I'll go a lot further. I came into this championship and knew I had a chance to win, and many other people do as well".
Ko is considered to be the world’s number one amateur player. She has considerable experience in playing international golf and she will give her best in the upcoming US Women's Amateur Championship.
