Kobe Bryant’s Move to Besiktas Could Work in Los Angeles Lakers favour – NBA Feature
As the lockout continues, so does the ongoing drama of players leaving the NBA for foreign pastures. Kobe Bryant is the most high profile player, who has been in the mix and was recently linked with the Turkish side Besiktas. However,
the move has not yet materialized and even though the chances seem to be getting slimmer by the day, the possibility still exists.
Deron Williams of the New Jersey Nets recently signed a one year deal with Besiktas, worth $5 million. As he packs his bags for Istanbul, Besiktas would love to see Kobe Bryant join the bandwagon as well.
Although the chances are slim, Kobe’s move to Istanbul might be a blessing in disguise for the Lakers. As it currently stands, the purple and gold are lacking a solid point guard. The deficiency became pronounced when the Lakers
took on the eventual NBA Champions, the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Semifinals. The likes of Jason Kidd and Jose Barea completely out foxed Derek Fisher throughout the series and gave the Lakers a rude awakening.
Now, destiny has played its course and has given Kobe a chance to share the court with Williams. If Kobe is one of the best shooting guards in the league, then Deron Williams is one of the best point guards and if Kobe moves to
Turkey alongside Deron, not only will it be a chance for both players to gel together on the court, it might help Kobe in persuading Deron to join the Lakers.
How many times have we seen players making moves and persuading others to join them? Dwyane Wade was instrumental in luring James and Bosh to Miami and create a ‘triple ripple’. Amare Stoudemire is said to have played a pivotal
role in the successful transfer of Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks.
So if Kobe and Deron team up in Turkey, the Lakers might just get lucky and successfully recruit the amazing D-Will into their star studded squad. And it isn’t that Williams will not be interested.
Although the Lakers are currently in the hunt for New Orleans’ star point guard Chris Paul, the move seems to be highly improbable due to the fact that Chris Paul has pledged his loyalty to the Hornets and neither Chris nor the
Hornets have any inclination of proceeding with the deal.
On the other hand, however, Deron Williams has no loyalty issues with the New Jersey Nets. In fact, he reportedly wanted a way out of the Nets and this might have played a key role in his move to Besiktas, with the lockout providing
the final spark.
There is no doubt that the Los Angeles Lakers is one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA and Deron will be well aware of this fact.
However, there is one slight hurdle. The new CBA might mean that the Lakers will not be able to lure in Deron Williams by offering him the sort of money, he could earn elsewhere. But history has always suggested that great players
go for the rings rather than the money – point in case, LeBron James.
Winning titles will definitely be top priority of Deron Williams, like any great player and the Lakers are one of the top contenders in that regard. So who knows, Kobe moving to Besiktas could really work out in the best interest
of the Lakers.
