Koen Ridder beats Tew Gee Chong in Men’s Singles qualifying round of Malaysia Open GP Gold 2011
Netherlands’ Koen Ridder has defeated Tew Gee Chong of Malaysia in the Men’s singles qualifying round of the Malaysia Open GP Gold 2011, at Alor Setar, Malaysia, on Tuesday, May 3. Ridder spent 43 minutes to beat Tew Chong, in a thrilling three-set match.
In the opening set of the match, Ridder started the game in an attacking way and quickly established a 6-2 lead against the Malaysian. Tew Chong increased his speed to find the momentum and reduced the gap by reaching at 7-8. However, Ridder managed to score
three points in a row to make it a four-point lead of 11-7, in the first half of the set.
After the one-minute rest, both shuttlers delivered good performance by playing aggressively, but the Malaysian made some unforced errors that helped the opponent build a good lead. Ridder remained positive in his execution of strokes and won the opening
set by a 21-15 score, in just 15 minutes.
The second set of the match was absolutely thrilling as both players put up a tremendous show of quality badminton. The score progressed slowly as a result of the long rallies from both sides. It was the Malaysian, who remained successful in setting up a
two-point lead at 11-9, in the first half of the set.
Tew Chong continued his aggressive play after the break by playing positively. Ridder tried his best to break the flow of the opponent, but failed as the Malaysian was playing with an incredible pace. Tew Chong clinched the second game in 17 minutes by a
21-19 margin.
The third set was completely one-sided, where Ridder demonstrated an incredible game. Right from the start of the set, he remained in complete control of the game. He was dictating the pace of the rallies and kept the opponent under pressure. At the interval,
Tew Chong was miles behind of the opponent at 3-11.
Ridder continued his impressive game after the one-minute rest. The Malaysian had no answer to the perfect game of the opponent. Ridder clinched the final set in just 11 minutes by a stunning margin of 21-6. The score of this 43-minute three-set battle was,
21-15, 19-21 and 21-6.
