Question:

Koi in house? Need some help please?

I have a small outside pond for my turtles and I have 2 small koi in there. They don't grow into the huge ones, I just don't know the name they call the smaller ones. Anyways, this is the first time we put fish in the pond and for the winter I was wondering if I could put them in a tank. It would just be the 2 fish, with some small minnows, but is that okay? What should I put in the tank? Do I make it like a regular goldfish tank? I know that you are supposed to buy a heater for the winter and all that, but the pond is so small it's useless to do that. Please help me out, thanks!!

  1. we took some of our koi in last  year for the winter, we just put them in a huge rubber maid storage container with a hang on filter  no heater. we treated it like a fish tank.   also be carefull with the turtles they will eventually eat the fish....   it will be fine to take them in for the winter. but dont put them back in untill water is a steady 65 F.   you dont kneed anything for decoration just use a bare tank with a filter . and do weekly water changes like 15-25%  and youll be golden

  2. we have plenty of koi which will not grow to huge ones since at an early stage parent stock is small not reach to a big size which makes them a non jumbo koi.

Just used bare tank will an overhead filter that will do.  these time around there are already plenty of koi keepers starting to put their kois indoors preparing for winter,  Koi indoors got less problem during winter rather than leave them outside when spring comes you got lots of problem with the kois.

    kOi keeper and goldfish keeper.

  3. 1)  Just like the last answer said, turtles will bother your fish, especially if they are small fish.  In fact, some turtles like to eat goldfish.

    2)  If you are trying to keep the minnows as pets, be very careful about putting Koi with them, as they put off a larger than normal concentration of ammonia.  This could be harmful to your minnows.

    3) If you live somewhere fairly temperate Koi should be OK outdoors in the winter.  It gets about 25-30 degrees here in the winter and I've had all sorts of koi and goldfish live through several winters.

  4. there are no koi that "don't grow into the huge ones"

anything that's an actual koi can grow to just over 3 feet if not stunted

if the pond isn't deep enough that you can't winter the koi in it, it's not big enough for koi in the first place

a koi pond should be at least 3 feet deep, deep enough so that even canadians can keep them and not freeze solid

preferably you should find a new home for these guys within the next years or two (spring is good as many people are setting up or starting ponds)

a large rubbermaid horse trough (200-500 gallons) should be good for this, and possiby next winter.. i really wouldn't keep them any longer than that

if by chance these are shubunkin goldfish and not koi then the same wintering technique listed above would work for life as they don't get much larger than 1 foot

  5. It's not good idea to have turtle with fish, your turtles will nip your koi fish, that's for sure. I would not recommend you to keep them together. You don't need a heater for your pond, koi will survive if your pond is deeep enough.
