Question:

Koi okay in aquarium

I recently got a koi fish, he is very small but I know that he will grow a bit more. Right now I am keeping him in a large tank, and he seems pretty happy. What I am wondering is if it is okay to keep him in an appropriate aquarium for the duration of his life, and whether or not koi usually adapt and grow to the size of their habitat.

Thank you!

  1. no

not unless you can get a 1000 gallon aquarium as that is the minimum space for a koi

  2. What kind of koi do you have and what size is the tank?

Depending on the type of koi you have  pedigree Koi or non-pedigree koi.  Sizes vary.  some types of koi never get over larger than 20 inches while others get very large (over 3 feet)

You can keep him in an aquarium, however by the end of his first year your koi should be somewhere around 10 inches long. That is a fairly large tank (nowhere near 1,000 gallons as was mentioned)   If you know the type of koi, male or female (females get much larger) yes you can house them in a tank.

Koi do not nor do any other fish grow to the size of their tank.  What happens is the fish just grow at a much slower rate.  (This is NOT stunting)  Where a koi with lots of dissolved oxygen, good food, exercise etc. will grow at a normal rate, a tank kept koi with the same will grow much slower.  This poses no real immediate harm to the fish and is actually how over years of breeding will get the smaller versions of koi.  Over the course of a koi's life which can span more than 100 years, it will shorten it.  As the old saying goes, swans (70-80 years) and koi (100-200years) are friends for life.  With the right tank, yes your koi can live in tanked conditions.  The main item you need to look at is does he have enough room to turn around and swim in the tank.  A shorter wider tank is best for koi.

  3. You can keep a Koi in a large tank for a while. But they will quickly outgrow it. A 1ft long Koi is still a baby, adult size is 2-3 ft.

While it's true that it will only grow to the size of the tank, thats because they become stunted and are then eventually poisoned by their own waste, and die prematurely.

A Koi should live for at least 50 years, so being able to keep one alive in a tank for 5 years isn't actually doing that well is it?

Start making plans to move it to a pond when it starts getting too big for your tank.

  5. if the koi is indoor will not grow much if you put your aquarium outdoors it will grow fast than you expected.  However it is not advisable to put koi in an aquarium but there are lot of people having them for years in a tank.
