Kolkata will not spin as much as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820, feels Rahul Dravid – Cricket News Update
India’s former captain and legendary batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/R-Dravid-c2229, believes that the pitch at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, will not turn as much as the Mumbai track, but expressed that a flatter deck is going to be a blessing in disguise for the home team’s batsmen.
With the series level at 1-1, the third Test will begin from December 5, 2012, at Kolkata.
After an emphatic victory in the first Test at Ahmedabad, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028, the Indian skipper asked for an even more helpful track for the spinners at Mumbai. The move however, backfired as the English spinners out-bowled their Indian counterparts to help their side square the series.
The pitch at Mumbai offered turn and bounce to the slow bowlers from day one, with the hosts failing to cope with the English spinners, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/GP-Swann-c1501, who grabbed 19 wickets in the encounter.
Some of the cricketing pundits have criticised India’s urge of attacking the opposition teams through their spinners but Dhoni has made it clear that he wants another turning-track in the third Test.
However, Dravid, who called it a day from international sport earlier this year, expressed that the nature of pitches in Kolkata are different to those of Mumbai, where it is much easier for a spinner to extract turn from the track.
“It's a different kind of soil, it does not break up,” he said. “It's black soil, red soil [like in Mumbai] tends to deteriorate very quickly and if you leave it dry, it can turn and bounce a lot more than the black soil does.”
The former captain thinks that a batting-friendly pitch at Kolkata is going to be beneficial for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 as the home team’s batsmen are short on confidence, although bowling the English team out twice will be a massive challenge for the Indian bowlers.
“I think that's a blessing in disguise from India's point of view. They might have to work harder for the wins but it'll also give their batsmen a chance to be able to put up big scores, and to be able to show they are good players of spin,” Dravid added.
