Kolohe Andino and Kieren Perrow make the Round 3 cut at Billabong Pipe Masters
America’s Kolohe Andino and Australia’s Kieren Perrow made their way through into the third round at the Billabong Pipe Masters after emerging triumphant in their respective Round 2 heats that went down at the Banzai Pipeline in Oahu, Hawaii, on Sunday,
December 9, 2012.
Andino got the better of his fellow countryperson Brett Simpson in the 11th heat to advance to the next round, removing the latter from the contention for the event title as a result.
The 12th heat saw Alves failing to hold his own against Perrow, consequently getting eliminated from the competition while sending the latter into the next round.
The pumping six-to-eight foot waves presented a perfect opportunity for the top surfing talent from around the globe to put their exquisite skills on display.
There was plenty of motivation for the surfers to express themselves freely at the competition, since it was the final stop on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour and third and final jewel on the 30th anniversary
Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, which meant a great opportunity for surfers to get their hands on a hefty prize cheque and coveted ASP ranking points.
Andino, the young surfer from California, found himself pitted against his compatriot Simpson in the 11th heat of Round 2.
With only one of the two surfers to go through into the next round, the battle was expected to be quite intense.
However, it turned out to be quite the contrary, with Simpson hardly presenting his rival with any serious challenge after registering a heat-total of 3.83 points, which included a 2.33 and 1.50-point ride.
The only challenge that Andino did have to face was the one offered by nature. He managed to best the challenge to eventually claim victory due to a two-wave total of 9.47 points, which included a 7.50 and 1.97-point ride.
The 12th heat saw Perrow, defending event champion, get the better of Alves with a comprehensive margin.
The Australian surfer posted an 8.83 on the score-board off his first business-wave and backed it up with a 7.50-point ride, thus getting to a heat-total of 16.33 points.
Alves only managed to get to a two-wave total of 7.12 points, which included a 7.00 and 0.12-point wave. The effort just was not good enough to keep him alive in the event.
