Kolohe Andino and Shane Dorian advance into Round 3 of Billabong Pipe Masters – 2011 ASP World Tour
The final stop of 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour and 2011 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, Billabong Pipe Masters, went on at Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, on Thursday, December 8. The ninth heat of the event
pitted America’s Kolohe Andino against Australia’s Laurie Towner, whereas the much-experienced Shane Dorian of Hawaii took on Brazil’s Willian Cardoso in the tenth heat.
Andino walked away with top honours from the ninth heat despite facing a lot of difficulty in controlling the waves. However, an even more disappointing performance by his competitor, Towner, allowed him to confirm his place in the third Round, while the
latter got relegated to Round 2.
The tenth heat saw Dorian take a win over Cardoso in what turned out to be yet another low-scoring affair as neither of the surfers was able to adjust to the mammoth-sized waves on offer. The win sent Dorian straight into Round 3, while Cardoso was added
to the Round 2 line-up.
Andino, the 17-year-old sensation from California, was looking to get a solid start at the latest elite tour event and though he did not accomplish it in a very convincing manner, he did finish with a successful result while facing Towner in the ninth heat
of Round 1.
As the heat kicked off, Andino struggled to adjust to the 15-to-20 foot waves that were on offer at the Banzai Pipeline. He only managed to lock three waves, earning 1.60 and 3.67 off the top two waves. The heat-total of 5.27 points was definitely not something
that Andino was expecting to get him through into Round 3, but it proved to be quite sufficient in the end.
Towner only managed to catch one wave throughout the entirety of the 40-minute heat and earned a mere 1.17 off it. As a result, he was forced to concede victory to his rival and head into Round 2 to try out for the Round 3 spot once again.
The tenth heat turned out to be yet another low-scoring affair as Dorian and Cardoso battled it out for the Round 3 spot in conditions that would have been enough to intimidate any surfer regardless of his talent and experience.
The 39-year-old Dorian collected a couple of threes to finish with a heat-total of 6.40 points, which proved to be enough to seal the fate of the contest in his favour, carrying him through into the third round.
Cardoso was completely outdone by the conditions at hand and finished with a heat-total of 1.94 points, which comprised of a 1.17 and 0.77-point wave. As a result, he got relegated to Round 2.
