Kolohe Andino defeats Kieren Perrow to qualify for Round 3 of Billabong Rio Pro – Surfing News
America’s Kolohe Andino secured his place in the third round of Billabong Rio Pro, the third of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Title Series, after putting on an impressive performance to get the better of Australia’s
Kieren Perrow in the 11th heat of Round 2 that went down at the main event site of Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Monday, May 14.
With the outcome of the battle coming out in Andino’s favour, Perrow was forced to step out of the contention for the event title.
The latest day of the competition did not turn out to be a walk in the part as far as collecting a couple of good scores was concerned. The stormy conditions, which comprised of strong winds and four-to-six foot barrels, kept the surfers on the back-foot
during their man-on-man battles. The switch from the flat conditions at Arpoador on day 1 of the competition to the barrelling conditions during Round 2 at Barra da Tijuca did not go too well with the top surfers, who struggled to collect a couple of good
scores throughout the day.
Pitted against each other in the 11th heat of Round 2, both Andino and Perrow found themselves standing on the edge without absolutely no room for error. They had failed to make much of an impression during their respective Round 1 heats at Arpoador
on Wednesday, thus getting relegated to the elimination round.
As the man-on-man bout got underway, Perrow drew first blood with an ordinary 1.00-point wave. He did not have much luck with the waves and hard to work hard to get his hands on another potential scoring opportunity. He eventually got hold of it to eventually
post a 5.50 on the score-board, thus finishing with a heat-total of 6.50 points.
The San Clemente-based Andino got off to a shaky start, struggling to find his rhythm as he tried to adjust to the challenging waves. In the later stages of the heat, the young Californian surfer scored a 4.83 off his first business-wave and immediately
followed it up with an impressive 7.33-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 12.16 points. The impressive performance served to earn him a comprehensive victory over his rival, taking him through into the next round of the competition.
