Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong reserve quarter-final berth at the 2011 World Championships
Malaysia’s ace shuttlers, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong proved their skills and occupied a quarter-final berth as they played tremendous badminton in the Men’s Doubles round-of-16 match against Lin Yu Lang and Chen Hung Ling of Taiwan at the 2011 World
Championships. The event was staged in London, on Thursday, August 11.
World Number Four pair, Koo Kien and Tan Boon found it quite easy to win over their Taiwanese opponents as the Malaysian pair delivered a wonderful performance in the straight-set pre-quarter-final match. They remained focused and finished-off the contest
by playing with confidence and won it with a good margin of 21-13 and 21-14.
In the opening set, Koo Kien and Tan Boon controlled the rallies from the start of the match and they remained in a strong position in the whole opening set. They never let their challengers dominate the rallies, as they were playing at maximum speed. The
Malaysians won the first set with considerable ease and a score of 21-13.
In the following set, Koo Kien and Tan Boon continued their display of top-standard badminton. Their strong pushes were going in the gaps and their rivals failed to dominate the game. The Malaysians ended the game by winning the second set in an impressive
way, with a margin of 21-14.
In the men’s Doubles quarter-final, Koo Kien and Tan Boon will take on Korea’s Yoo Yeon Seong and Ko Sung Hyun, a pair that the Malaysians have never defeated before. Koo Kien said, “We will go out there and give it our best shot. Win or lose does not matter
as what is important is that we put up our best performance and the result will follow.”
While talking about the previous meeting with this Korean pair, Koo Kien added, “Statistics may not be in our favour but it’s a different match each time we play them and we aim to make the most of it.
He also said, “It’s not as if we will be satisfied making the last eight as everyone wants to win but we have to realize that our opponents are a class above.”
The Malaysians are confident to win against Yoo Yeon Seong and Ko Sung Hyun, as they have found their momentum and are expected to get rid of their jinx against the Korean challengers.
