Kops-Jones/Spears conquer Amanmuradova/King in the final showdown – KDB Korea Open 2012
Top seeded Americans, Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, bounced back to overpower the Uzbekistani-American tandem, Akgul Amanmuradova and Vania King, in a three-set nail-biter at the KDB Korea Open Tennis Championship 2012 on Sunday. They clobbered a
2-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory against their rivals to capture the title at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event held in Seoul, South Korea.
The American junction unveiled their true colours after gifting away the opening set at this outdoor hard court event. They maintained their rhythm in the final set and ultimately sealed the deal in one hour and 19 minutes in their first encounter.
The unseeded duo of Amanmuradova and King went berserk after entering the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center. They reeled off the opening five games through exceptional co-ordination. Regardless of squandering a chance of serving out the breadstick, the Uzbekistani-American
tandem broke their opponents’ serve once again and clinched the opener with a 6-2 score line. They failed to ward off the lone breakpoint they came across but cashed in three out of seven break opportunities to inch towards the glory.
Kops-Jones and Spears re-focused their strategy in the following set. They got the coveted break in the third game and climbed to a 3-1 lead. After Amanmuradova and King held their serve in the fifth game, the American pocketed the last three games and clicked
the equaliser with a 6-2 win. They superbly defended both breakpoints they faced and converted two out of three break chances to their advantage.
The match could have gone in any direction but the highest ranked team of the tournament held their composure in the super tie-breaker. They clobbered a lower first serve share but dominated throughout the set, eventually sealing the decider with a 10-8
score line.
All in all, the top seeded Americans recorded an impressive stat. They smacked three aces and despite clobbering a lower first serve share of 56 per cent as compared to their rivals’ 65 per cent, the Americans amazingly clinched 22 out of 31 points on it.
They spilled more double faults but finished the deal with 57 points as opposed to their rivals’ 49 points.
