Kops-Jones/Spears overpower Jurak/Marosi to enter semis – KDR Korea Open 2012
Top seeded American duo, Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, battled past the Croatian-Hungarian team, Darija Jurak and Katalin Marosi, in a three-set thriller at the KDR Korea Open Tennis Championships 2012 on Thursday. They summed up a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8
victory against their rivals to progress into the semi-finals at this outdoor hard court event taking place in Seoul, South Korea.
Kops-Jones and Spears displayed amazing co-ordination and co-operation to triumph over their opponents in one hour and 37 minutes. As a result, the seeds comfortably advanced into the final four at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event.
The American seeds made a convincing entry at the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center. They brilliantly dusted away all three breakpoints they came across to keep their entire serves. Kops-Jones and Spears reeled off the last four games and eventually sealed
the opener by winning six games to two.
Jurak and Marosi carried her losing ways in the following set. They lost their opening serve and fell at 0-3. However, the Croatian-Hungarian tandem not only recovered in the fifth game but broke again to jump to a 5-3 lead. They exchanged a serve break
near the end and ultimately clinched the equaliser with a 7-5 score line.
The highest ranked team re-gained their strength in the final set or the super tie-breaker. They edged past their opponents and subsequently clicked the decider with a 10-8 success.
The Americans clobbered an equal first serve share of 58 per cent and impressively availed 30 out of 42 points on it. They smashed three aces and ended the match with 77 points.
Next in line for the Americans are the third seeds, South Africa’s Natalie Grandin and Czech Republic’s Vladimira Uhlirova. The third seeded junction warded off early resistance to outshine the Romanian-American pair, Alexandra Cadantu and Varvara Lepchenko,
in straight sets.
The Austrian-Czech team of Tamira Paszek and Klara Zakopalova also stole the show later that day. They needed one hour and 16 minutes to triumph over the fourth seeds, Vera Dushevina and Alicja Rosolska. Paszek and Zakopalova lost their serve four times
but capitalised on four out of nine break chances to earn the glory.
