Korea Open GP Gold: Daren Liew ousts Young Woo Choi to reach into Men’s Singles quarter-final
Malaysia’s talented back-up shuttler, Daren Liew stretches his winning streak as he has reached into quarter-final after beating Korea’s Young Woo Choi in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 of the 2011 Korea Open GP Gold, on Thursday, December 8, in Korea.
Daren, who is currently World Number 48, has played impressive badminton in all matches of Korea Open so far. In the pre-quarter-final fight against Young Woo, the Malaysian had to dig deep into his reserves as won the battle in three games by taking 65
minutes of the court time. The Korean played fast and positive badminton and put up strong resistance but not enough to overpower the higher ranked Malaysian.
In the first set, both men put up superb show by playing aggressive badminton. However, it was the Malaysian who dominated the game in the end and won it with a reasonable margin. In the following set of the match, the Korean lifted up his level of play
and remained successful in taking the game with a close margin. It was a smooth sailing for Daren in the final game as he faced no trouble to win it with a remarkable margin.
The starting points of the first game were thrilling when both shuttlers played with precision. The score remained tight as no one could manage a comfortable lead in the game until the score reached in the concluding phase. Daren was in complete control
of the pace at this stage and took the game with a margin of 21-18.
In the next set, the Korean increased his speed to dominate the rallies and managed to remain close to his Malaysian rival. Daren failed to take a lead in the game as his opponent was playing wonderful game. He made a few mistakes at the crucial stage of
the game and eventually lost the set with a close difference of 19-21.
In the final game, the 12th seed Malaysian played to his maximum potential and established a comfortable gap against the Korean, who failed to control the bird. Daren won the final game with a huge margin of 21-13. The final result of this three-set
match was 21-18, 19-21 and 21-13.
In the quarter-final match, Daren will face his compatriot, Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif, who defeated Korea’s Hoon Min Jung in the round-of-16 contest.
