Indonesia’s in-form player, Tommy Sugiarto continues his remarkable run as he has overwhelmed Jen Hao Hsu of Chinese Taipei in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 in the 2011 Korea Open Grand Prix Gold, in Korea, on Thursday, December 8.
The World Number 19, Sugiarto, who is also 5th seed in the Men’s Singles draw of the event, played to his full potential and emerged as victorious in three games by taking 65 minutes in the court. Jen Hao committed many unforced mistakes in the ending set and lost the match to higher ranked Indonesian shuttler.
Sugiarto dominated the first set without facing any problem as he won it by a remarkable score. In the second game, the Taipei shuttler showed his class and levelled the match by taking the set with a good score. In the final set, the Indonesian worked well by playing with precision and took the set with an impressive margin.
In the starting points, Sugiarto established a surprising lead in a flash as his opponent played negative badminton. The impressive speed coupled with perfect execution of strokes helped the Indonesian to continue his domination over the pace of the rallies.
The Taipei shuttler failed to find a good flow in the game as his higher ranked opponent played flawless badminton. Sugiarto finished up the game with a one-sided score of 21-11.
Jen Hao accelerated his speed to tackle the aggression of Sugiarto in the second set. He employed different tactics this time as he took the bird early and remained in complete control. Sugiarto failed to dominate the rallies anymore and lost the second set with a six-point deficit of 15-21.
In the deciding set, the Indonesian became aggressive and started to execute powerful smashes from the rear-court area. His wonderful accuracy troubled the Taipei shuttler, who became defensive in this final set. The attacking play of Sugiarto helped him to take the game with comfortable score of 21-14. This pre-quarter-final battle ended in 65 minutes with a 21-11, 15-21 and 21-14 score on the board.
In the quarter-final, Sugiarto will fight against the higher ranked Lee Hyun Il of Korea, who tamed his team-mate Ye Wook Rho in the round-of-16 contest.
