Korea Open Premier Super Series: Daren Liew defeats Sourabh Varma in Men’s Singles qualifying round
Malaysia’s talented back-up shuttler, Daren Liew, has overpowered India’s young shuttler, Sourabh Varma, in the Men’s Singles qualifying round of the Korea Open Premier Super Series 2012, on Tuesday, January 3, at Seoul, South Korea.
Daren Liew, who has been ranked at number 47 in the Men’s Singles world rankings, had to employ all skills to beat the talented Indian in a thrilling fight. He consumed 52 minutes to beat Sourabh in three games and advanced into the next stage of qualifying
round.
Sourabh showed his class by playing remarkable badminton against the Malaysian in the first game and took it with a comfortable margin. However, he failed to remain in control as Daren occupied the driving set and took both remaining games to end the match
in a convincing way.
Both shuttlers started the first game in a composed fashion as they played with precision and remained close in the starting half of the game. However, Sourabh increased his speed in the second half and remained successful in taking a reasonable lead.
Daren was struggling hard to find momentum as his rival was targeting the right areas. The Malaysian failed to stop the aggression of his challenger and lost the first game with a margin of 15-21.
In the second game, Daren played attacking badminton and came fast at the net to execute spinning shots. His strategy worked in his favour as he managed a wonderful lead against Sourabh and maintained it throughout the set. He took the second game with a
21-14 score and levelled the match.
In the final set, both played entertained the crowd with their impressive performance as they progressed closely in the first half of the game. Sourabh was playing with aggression while Daren was playing mixed game.
It was Daren who played wonderful badminton in the ending phase of the third set and managed to win it with a 21-18 score on the board.
This Men’s Singles qualifying round battle ended up in three games of 52 minutes and Daren emerged as the winner of this fight by a margin of 15-21, 21-14 and 21-18.
