Korea confirms its berth into the final of London Cup after defeating Belgium by 3-1
Korea has confirmed its place into the final of the London Cup after they defeated Belgium by 3-1 in their last group match, which was played at University of Westminster Quintin Hogg Sports Grounds in Chiswick, London, England on Friday, July 15. With the
victory, Korea tops the point-table with seven points.
The match was a contest between the two sides, where the Belgian athletes did not allow Korea, the reigning Asian Champions, to play in full flow. Korea had to struggle very hard to find the right path to the Belgian net where they could make a single strike
in the first half and scored two goals in the second half, while the Belgian side scored a single goal in the second half.
Korea exhibited some wonderful efforts into the start of the match, but they had to wait until the 23rd minute, when Kyu Yeob Jang converted a penalty-corner into the opening goal and put his team ahead of Belgium. The score remained 1-0 to Korea
at the interval.
The early part of the second half also depicts the same story as the Koreans had to fight a tough battle to double their lead. However, they eventually succeeded in doing so in the 52nd minute, when Hyo Sik You scored a wonderful field goal. Belgium
replied seven minutes after Korea and reduced the Korean goal in the 59th minute, thanks to Cedric Charlier. On the other side, Korea continued with the same pace and scored the final goal of the match in the 64th minute. Nam Yong lee
was the scorer. The match concluded at 3-1 to Korea.
Korean coach seemed much pleased with the performance of his athletes in the match in spite of the loss of their goal-keeper due to injury.
“Prior to this tournament our goalkeeper had a lot of problems with his hip and missed a lot of training. As a result I was wary what his performance would be like but the team worked hard to make up for it and we are delighted to progress to the final on
Saturday,” Moon Ki Yoo, coach of the Korean national hockey side, stated with a lot of delight after the important victory over the Belgian athletes.
Korea will play Black Sticks men in the final of the event which is going to be played today on July 16.
