Korea defeats DPR Korea to enter semi-finals: 16th Asian Senior Women's Volleyball Championship
The last quarter-final of the 16th Asian Senior Women's Volleyball Championship took place between Korea and DPR Korea on September 21. The Koreans fought their way through the DPR Korea defence to claim a win in the city of Taipei and a spot at the Semi-final
table.
The first and the second sets were dominated by the Koreans as DPR Korea was seen struggling with their game. However, a two set deficit got the DPR Koreans playing harder and they managed to avoid a clean sweep by bagging the third set of the game. Unfortunately
for the DPR Koreans, that was the only moment of glory for them as Korea smothered them in the fourth set and sealed the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 25-20, 25-14, 22-25 and 25-14.
The start of the first set of the game saw the DPR Koreans taking the lead early on at 6-5 and they were able to stretch the advantage until the first technical time out at 8-5. The DPR Koreans were able to strengthen their defence and make it harder for
the Koreans to score points that helped DPR Korea to extend their advantage to 14-9. However, Korea was not about to give up just yet and they were propelled forwards by their star spiker, Kim Yeon Koung, to tie the match at 14-14. DPR Korea took the lead
again with the coming of the second technical time out at 16-15. However, as the teams returned to the courts, Korea took control of the game and bagged a win at 25-20.
Building on the confidence generated by winning the first set, the Koreans were able to come out strong in the second set as well and took the lead at 8-4. Korea was able to maintain their advantage up to the second technical time out at 16-9. All DPR Korea
could do was to close in the gap but the set went to Korea at 25-14.
The third set was tied at 14-14 but DPR Korea managed to bag it at 25-22. Korea got the lead at 8-4 in the fourth set and stuck with it until the end at 25-14.
The players that were able to register the highest number of points belonged both to Korea as well as DPR Korea as each posted a total of 30 points. From the Korean side, it was Kim Yeon Koung while from DPR Korea, Jong Jin Sim, lead her team. The Korean
player, Han Song, made her presence felt by adding 17 points of her own. On the other hand, the second best scorer on the DPR Korea squad was trailing far behind Sim by putting up seven points in the entire match.
After having won the quarter-finals, the Koreans will be up against the Chinese in the semi-final round of the tournament.
