Korea defeats USA 3-2: Boy’s Youth World Championship - Volleyball
USA and Korea were up against each other in the second round of the Boy’s Youth World Championship that is currently taking place in Argentina. The two teams played each other on August 26th in Almirante Brown. The match that followed took five
sets to reach its close at the end of which the Koreans were celebrating their hard earned win that terminated their losing streak in the tournament.
The first set of the match was bagged by the Koreans after the initial struggle between the two sides. However, the USA rebounded in the second set and equalised the match. The Koreans could not outperform the Americans in the third set and USA won the set
by a significant margin. The Koreans were able to step up their game in the fourth set and take the match to a decisive fifth set that was secured by Korea, giving them the match at the following final set scores: 25-20, 20-25, 18-25, 25-19 and 15-11.
The coach of the Korean team, Eun-Chul Kim, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference after the match had reached its close: "Almost all matches we had already played were finished in tie-break, my players were tired but they could
focused in order to win. I am very happy."
On the other hand, the American coach, Ken Shibuya, shared his feelings by giving these statements: "It was impossible for us to stop Korean's attacks. In the last two sets we were unfocused so we couldn't give good balls."
The start of the first set saw both teams make service errors. By the time the second technical time out was reached, the Koreans were leading at 16-14. The Americans could not gain any headway after that and the Koreans took the match to 25-20 in their
favour.
The score remained close in the second set at 8-5 and later on at the second technical time out at 16-13. After the teams came back onto the courts, the Americans were able to swing things in their favour and bag a win at 25-20.
The Americans had the lead at 8-5 and they were able to extend the advantage to 16-8 in the third set. The Koreans tried to keep things alive but the Americans got away with a 25-18 win.
The fourth set of the game gave the lead away to Korea at 8-3 and they kept the advantage till they had won the set at 25-19. The Koreans started the fifth set strong while the American team fell to making errors that cost them the final set at 11-15.
The player that was able to make the most points in both the teams was the Korean Gyeong-Bok Na with 23 points while the top scorer from the American side was Aaron Russell with 16 points.
