Korea earns first win in FIVB Men’s World Olympic Qualifying Tournament
The fourth day of the FIVB Men's World Olympic Qualifying Tournament started off on June 6, Wednesday in Tokyo.
The venue of the competitions is the Tokyo Metropolitan Gym where one of the matches being played was between Korea and Venezuela. The result of the clash was a win for Korea that marked their first one in the tournament yet.
Not only were the Koreans able to win the match, they did so by making a clean sweep over their opponents. Despite the loss of the three back-to-back sets, the Venezuelans put up a good show in the first and the second sets. It was only in the third set
that the Koreans were able to smoother their rivals. The scoreboard showed the following final set scores: 27-25, 25-22 and 25-15.
Overall, the key to the Korean victory was their superior attacking and blocking techniques.
The coach of the Korean squad, Park Ki Won expressed his happiness at the win in the following words, “We won because we varied our attacks and our blocks were much better today. That is it.”
On the other hand, the Venezuelan coach shared his views by giving the following comments, “The first set was high quality by both teams. We lost power and balance after that. Our play and combinations became unbalanced. We have less experience that Korea.
We have a younger team. We need more time together to become a stronger team. I would say I am only 50 percent satisfied with today's performance by our team.”
The highest points scored in the match was by the Koreans player Choi Hong-Suk who kept the pressure on his opponents by scoring 18. Hong-Suk was helped by team mate Shin Yung-Suk who was able to add 10 points. On the other hand, the Venezuelans were led
by Kervin Pinerua as he scored 12 points.
The tournament statistics of both the Koreans as well as the Venezuelans stand at 1-3 so far. Next in line for the Koreans is a match with the Chinese while the Venezuelans are scheduled to play with the Iranians.
