Question:

Korean Air luggage crisis!?

A few days ago, I flew on Korean Air after a long tiring trip. When I received my bags at luggage claim at the destination, my nightmare began. One of my largest suitcases was half-soaked with kimchi (pickled cabbage) juice, and another had spills on it. The smell was horrendous! So I went to the Korean Air representatives on site to report this and they filled out a form and promised to call back with a solution. When they called back, their idea of a "solution" was to make ME go to the dry cleaner and send them the bill! Well, the struggle goes on, and they keep coming up with unreasonable answers. At the latest, they've offered me $150 (their reasoning is that they should pay $20 per kg of damage). $150 wouldn't cover a fraction of the damage! My question is, what is a fair compensation for this situation?

  1. If you flew Internationally, then losses are limited by the international agreement covering such claims.  If your damages are greater than those afforded by the convention, then you can either try to fight the airline for a larger settlement (good luck with this), or you may try to file a claim with your homeowner's or renter's insurance policy.  Your insurance policy covers your property anywhere in the world.  You will be out the amount of your deductible, but if you have significant claims, you should be able to get most of this covered.

    Good luck!
