Korean K.J. Choi back in form at the Masters – Masters News
Korea’s top ranked player Choi Kyung-Ju who is known as K.J. Choi started his Masters campaign in classic style. He always loves playing on this course and thoroughly enjoyed his round on the first day.
Choi carded a superb round of five-under par, 67 and is just two shots behind the leader. He started off where he ended last year. The veteran Korean played superbly on the first day and had seven birdies on his score card. He also had to drop two shots
on the 5th and 11th.
It was overall a good performance by the Korean and he was overwhelmed with the way he played during his round. The last par-4, 18th turned out to be a good one for him, as his drive was stuck in the woods from where he played a superb shot. Choi’s
approach shot to the green landed on the fringe which left him a long birdie putt. He confidently made the long putt for birdie and was happy with his round.
Choi only has a total of 17 wins playing as a professional. His best finish at the Masters was in 2004 where he finished alone for the third spot. The 40-year-old at the end made a superb come-back by making five birdies in his closing six holes. It looked
like the Korean targeted a few spots on the greens.
The greens were truly firm and fast as Choi read the lines perfectly. The crowd was also cheering for the player and he now trails by two shots over the European leaders.
Choi and his countryman Y.E. Yang lead the charge from Asia. Both these players have great respect for each other and were proud of them.
Last year at the Masters, Choi finished tied for the fourth spot with Tiger Woods, as he played well during all the four rounds, but his score was not enough to fetch him a victory. Now in this tournament, he already has shown what he is capable of doing.
His last five birdies certainly helped him place his name on the leader board. This course has always been in favour of Choi and he also has produced under par rounds. Only on two occasions he failed to make it through the cutline. It was in 2006 and 2009
where Choi was not in complete form.
Choi after his round said, “I feel comfortable because I know where to hit the ball on to the green and I know where to attack the fairways. The fact that there are so many galleries here on both sides of the hole, it really enables me to focus. It’s easy
to set the target.”
The veteran is confident that he will end his drought by winning his maiden green jacket on the final day Sunday.
