Kostya Tszyu to be Denis Lebedev's boxing trainer – Boxing News
The Australian boxing icon, Kostya Tszyu will start his career as a head trainer later this month. He will be in the corner of the Russian cruiserweight, Denis Lebedev, who has set up a potential clash with the great
Roy Jones on May 21, in Moscow.
Lebedev’s manager requested the former undisputed World Light Welterweight Champion, Tszyu, to train his 31-year-old fighter to face the multi World Title winner, Roy Jones, who was dramatically stopped by Danny Green
in late 2009.
Lebedev, who lost his battle against the WBO Cruiserweight Champion, Marco Huck, in Berlin last December, is eager to for a win over Jones, as he believes it is going to earn him a re-match with Huck.
"With Danny Green fighting against Antonio Tarver it's another good opportunity for us and if and when we are going to win the WBO title, we maybe accept a challenge for our fighter in Australia," Tszyu said.
Tszyu told AAP on the phone from Moscow that he respects Jones and admits he is one of the best of all times.
"He's a good friend of mine, which means it's a good challenge for us, it's one of the reasons why I accept this challenge, because it's Roy," added Tszyu.
Australian fight fans will be able to judge Tszyu’s ability as a trainer when he goes in front of a sold-out 7,000 seat facility.
Tszyu, who was last seen in the ring six years ago against Ricky Hatton in Manchester, will also be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in New York next month.
Tszyu went on to add, "This is a big honour, it's Mike Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez, (referee) Joe Cortez and (Rocky star) Sylvester Stallone, it's good company, I look forward to it."
He also expressed his condolence for the great legendary Australian boxer “Lionel Rose”, who passed away at the age of 62.
