“I thought the fellas did well. We played in total around ten games we lost two games. So I thought was a good tour,” Braithwaite said while speaking to reporters after the team’s return to the Caribbean. “We had our chance to go through and win but we didn’t
. We just have to continue working harder as individuals.”
“It was international under 19s so we just embraced the environment and know that we have to come and work hard if we want to come and play internationally at the highest level,” he added.
The West Indies U-19s got off to an ideal start, during the tournament hosted by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Namibia-c2964 Under-19s respectively.
They carried the same momentum into the league stage of the tournament, during which they were placed in Group C. A 4-wicket victory over the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Papua-New-Guinea-c41002
U-19s on August 13, and a 6-wicket win over the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045 U-19s at the Endeavour Park No 2 in Townsville on August 16.
Having breezed through the league stage, the team met their downfall in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 U-19s, who defeated them narrowly by a margin of 3 wickets, with zero balls remaining, in the quarter-final on August 20.
Recalling the quarter-final against the New Zealand U-19s, Brathwaite claimed that while it had been a “tight match” which the team eventually went on to lose, it was a “learning experience” which would make the players “stronger individuals”.
Following their ouster from the next stage of the tournament, the Windies were also unable to win the 5th place play-off against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 U-19s, which they lost by 13 runs, and the 2012 World Cup was eventually clinched by the India U-19s.
With the 9th edition of the tournament concluded, the West Indies continue winless in the U-19 World Cup. The closest they came to victory was the 2004 edition in Bangladesh, during which they made it to the finals before losing out to the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755
U-19s, and the 2008 edition in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Malaysia-c2949, during which they were the plate champions.
