Can someone tell me something more about krav maga? There is a lot of question about this issue, but I need an answer from someone who is into it for years. I hope for an objective approach and also I would like to know how years of training in this style can affect someone's overall fitness and basically health. Thanks...

  1. look i'm not in krav magra but I've seen it done its not to different then my art but still make sure that you have a good school. it all depends on the teacher please please make sure you look into the school be for joining

  2. I've spend a good bit of time in Krav, there is also another poster here who shows up.. wuboyblu or something of the sort who has some real nice Krav background from the IDF.

I trained at Wingate for 6 months and have done it for a few years stateside when I get a chance.

But look, as far as overall fitness and health, ANY activity is going to be good for you, any exercise you get that you enjoy and do for a long time will help. Krav is no different, they do pretty good conditioning and warm ups, and as such you will get in shape, feel better, have more energy, and will have a tendency to want to eat better and be overall healthier.

Krav doesn't hold any magical properties in it that other arts, or sports, or exercise that allow it to make you healthier. It also doesn't have anything in it's curriculum that is unhealthy. Unless of course you have an instructor who says your diet should consist of McDonalds, and he teaches you to fight while sitting on a couch, or chair.

In all actuality, Krav Maga, Judo, Karate, TKD, you name it, is going to help you get in shape, and help your over all health.

Let me know what more specifically you would like to know. If you click on my name it will take you to my profile, there is a link to the right that says "Email Judomofo" send me a message and I will get back with you and help you out to the best of my ability with any more specifics.

    Good luck!

    EDIT:

Seriously if you get a chance to train with Eyal Yanilov, then that is more than awesome. That is probably one of the most legit Krav organizations out there. If you are in Israel, or going to Israel, and get a chance to train at Wingate  it is the absolute best place to go, to get real authentic, effective Krav Maga, and Eyal Yanilov is pretty much the top Krav Maga instructor in the world. (Highest ranking member of the art handed down by Imi Sde Or). I know he travels a lot, do you plan on spending a lot of time at a particular place, or doing some of his seminars?

That is more than a good background, that is pretty much the best background that a civilian will get a chance to train with.

  3. Hi, I've been practicing Krav for a bit over three years now and to answer your question, if you train regularly (minimum twice a week), then yes, your fitness and health will improve... just like if you trained in any style or played a sport twice a week.

We are members of the IKMF and its a good mob to be with.  Unfortunately there are a lot of "Krav Maga" schools out there where I am not sure where they received their instructors certification from. ( I saw an ad for one system which claims it can make you a top level instructor in a one weekend course!)

I am not sure Eyal actually takes regular classes himself as he is always pretty much travelling.  He held a workshop here in Brisbane (Australia) in May and was off to Thailand from there.  But anyone who has come through the IKMF system should be a pretty competant instructor as their quality control standards are high.

I hope you find a school you enjoy training at.  Not only will you learn skills that you will be glad you have if ever needed, you will also improve your fitness.

    Good luck.
