Kremlin Cup, Saturday previews
With only two days left in the tournament, Kremlin Cup sees several important matches on Saturday the 23rd of October. With five semifinals and one final, it is a decisive day for the tournament.
The first matchup of the day is the women’s singles semifinal between the Spanish Maria Martinez Sanchez and the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka. Both pros had an easy straight set win in their quarterfinals match earlier in the tournament. Martinez defeated
the Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova by 6-2, 6-3 whereas Azarenka kicked the Russian Alisa Kleybanova out of the running with a 6-1, 6-3 win.
The match that follows is a particular matchup. It is the women’s singles semi final played between the Russians Vera Dushevina and Maria Kirilenko. With either win, Russia has a spot secured for her in the finals thus still having a shot at the title.
If Stockholm Open 2009 Champion, Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus, will play a semi final match against the Uzbek professional Denis Istomin. Seeded 4th in the tournament, Baghdatis may have the odds favor him and he might just secure a spot for himself
in the final.
However, Istomin may not be easy to defeat as he won his quarterfinal match with a straight set score of 6-2, 6-4 and crushed the Motherland’s hope of a title win by kicking out the only Russian contender, Igor Kunitsyn.
Serbian Victor Troicki will meet the Uruguay national Pablo Cuevas in the second semi final match of the day. Troicki had a straight set win in his quarterfinal match and if he manages to reproduce that performance in the semi final he might just secure
a spot for himself in the final.
Saturday will see its first title decision of the tournament as the women’s doubles final match is scheduled for the day. The match will be played between the Italian Spanish pair of Sara Errani and Martinez and the team of Italian Flavia Pennetta and Argentinean
Gisela Dulko. As both the teams battle it out for the title, an Italian title win is inevitable.
The last remaining semi final for the men’s doubles will be played between the Serbian team of Janko, Tipsarevic, Troicki, and the Argentinean team of Horacio Zeballos and Maximo Gonzalez. The winner of this match will go on to face the Russian team of Igor
Kunitsyn and Dmitry Tursunov.
Other events scheduled for the day are the Boris Yeltsin Foundation Ceremony and WTA doubles award ceremony.
