Kremlin Cup 2010: Friday Preview
Kremlin cup creeps towards its end as seventh day of play will begin on Friday, 22nd October 2010. The Cup is a nine day event ending on Sunday 24th
October, 2010. Several crucial matches are scheduled for the day with number of quarterfinals and semi finals in all the categories.
The day begins with a quarterfinal match between Pablo Cuevas from Uruguay and the Czech Radek Stepanek in the central court. Going by ATP world rankings, this will be an interesting match since Pablo currently ranks at 71 whereas
the Czech ranks at 37.
The men’s singles quarterfinal match will be followed by two women’s singles quarterfinals one after the other. The first of which is to be played between the Russian Alisa Kleybanova and Victoria Azarenka from Uruguay. The second
quarterfinal is between Zarina Diyas from Kazakhstan and Maria Kirilenko from Russia. Russian tennis fans will be much excited tomorrow hoping for a motherland win in these two matches. Both Alisa and Maria have the home court advantage thus improving Russia’s
chances for winning the title this year.
A thrilling match for the day will be the women’s singles quarterfinal between Anna Chakvetadze and Vera Dushevina. Both being Russian players, have home court advantage but besides game play a decisive factor will be as to who
has more fans in the audience.
The last women’s singles quarterfinal of the day will be between Maria Martinez Sanchez and Dominika Cibulkova.
Another Russian contender for the title this year is Igor Kunitsyn who will be facing the Uzbek Denis Istomin in a quarterfinal match, tomorrow afternoon. All of Russia’s hope rests on him as he is the only Russian still in the
running for the title in the men’s singles competition.
Other men’s singles quarterfinals scheduled for the day with the following pair-ups: Alexandr Dolgopolov (Ukraine) vs. Marcos Baghdatis (Cyprus) and Victor Troicki (Serbia) vs. Horacio Zeballos (Argentina).
The men’s doubles category has two matches scheduled for the day. A quarter final between the team of Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna, nicknamed the “Indo-Pak Express”, and the Serbian team of Janko Tipsarevic and Victor
Troicki. The winner of this matchup will go to face the Argentinean team of Maximo Gonzalez and Horacio Zeballos.
The first semi final of the Cup is also scheduled for the day between the Russian team of Igor Kunitsyn and Dmitry Tursunov and the pair of Jeremy Chardy and Lukas Dlouhy. Hoping for a Russian win, the fans will be backing the
Russian pair to make it into the final.
Women’s doubles category has two decisive matches scheduled for the day. The first semifinal will be played between the pair Sara Errani (Italy)/ Maria Sanchez (Spain) and the pair of Akgul Amanmuradova (Uzebkistan)/ Darya Kustova
(Belarus). Later in the day, the second semi final will be played between the team of Gisela Dulko (Argentina) and Flavia Pennetta (Italy), and the team of Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) and Maria Kirilenko (Russia).
Scheduled around midday is the award ceremony for the 2010 Kremlin Cup;  Ingosstrakh award for "Fair Play" and "Miss Kremlin Cup". Last year winner of the award for fair play went to Janko Tipsarevic and the “Miss Kremlin Cup”
went to Vera Zvonareva.
