Kremlin Cup 2010: Friday’s review
A decisive day for Kremlin Cup 2010 as seventh day of play draws to a close; with mostly quarterfinals and semifinals scheduled for the day a lot of important results were observed on the scoreboard.
In the women’s singles matches, 2nd seeded Belarusian Victoria Azarenka humiliated Alisa Kleybanova with a match score of 6-1, 6-3. The Russian, out of the running, never got a chance to bounce back. Azarenka now sails
into the semi finals where she will meet the 8th seeded Maria Martinez Sanchez from Spain. Maria also had an easy win over the Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova with a match score of 6-2, 6-3.
It was not a disappointing day for the Russians however, as Maria Kirilenko thrashed the Kazakh Zarina Diyas in her quarterfinal match. The final match score was 6-1, 6-2. Another win for the Motherland came in the form of Vera
Dushevina when she defeated her compatriot Anna Chakvetadze in an exciting nail biting match. Unseeded Vera won the match with a final score of 6-3, 7-6.
With the results of the men’s singles quarterfinals in, it is clear that a Russian win is out of question since the only contender for the title, Igor Kunitsyn was embarrassed on the court by the Uzbek Denis Istomin who won the
match by 6-2, 6-4.
The first quarterfinal of the day was played between Pablo Cuevas from Uruguay and the Czech Radek Stepanek. Pablo won against Radek with a match score of 6-3, 7-6(3). Pablo will now face the Serbian Victor Troicki in the semi
finals. The Serbian played the Argentinean Horacio Zeballos in his quarterfinal match, and with a match score of 6-2, 6-1 he eased into the semis.
Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus played against the Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov. In a match that lasted 88 minutes, Marcos finally defeated Alexandr with a final match score of 6-2, 7-6 to secure a spot in the semi finals where he
will face Istomin.
The last and only quarterfinal match remaining for the men’s doubles was played between the pair, Aisam ul Haq Qureshi (Pakistan) and Rohan Bopanna (India), and the Serbian team of Janko Tipsarevic and Victor Troicki. The Serbs
defeated the famed Indo Pak express with a match score of 6-4, 7-5 to move on into the semi finals. They will face the Argentinean team of Maximo Gonzalez and Horacio Zeballos. The winner of this match will go onto face the Russian team of Igor Kunitsyn and
Dmitry Tursunov in the finals. The Russian pair had a semi final match today against the French Jeremy Chardy and the Czech Lukas Dlouhy.
Women’s doubles finalists were also decided today; Maria paired with the Italian Sara Errani and sailed into the finals as they defeated the team of Uzbek Akgul Amanmuradova and Belarusian Darya Kustova. The final match score was
6-2, 6-1.
The other finalist for the women’s doubles is the team of Argentinean Gisela Dulko and the Italian Flavia Pennetta. The pair won against the team of Victoria Azarenka from Belarus and Maria Kirilenko from Russia. The match score
was 7-6, 7-3, 6-4. With one half of both the teams being Italians, we can safely say that Italy will have a title win this year.
