Kremlin Cup 2010: Thursday review for men’s matches
As fourth day of play in the Kremlin Cup draws to a close, a lot of important results were seen on the scoreboard. Seven out of the eight spots for the men’s singles quarterfinals have been filled. Three of the four quarter finals
were scheduled for the day. Two have been completed to give a clearer picture of the teams still in the running for the title
The first quarterfinal of the day was between the Argentinean team of Maximo Gonzalez and Horacio Zeballos, and the pair, Stephen Huss from Australia and Ross Hutchins from Great Britain. The Argentinean team secured a spot in
the semi finals by defeating the Huss- Hutchins pair with a set score of 7-5, 6-3.
The second quarterfinal of the day was played between the pair of Pablo Cuevas (Uruguay) and Michael Russell (U.S.A), and the pair of Jeremy Chardy (France) and Lukas Dlouhy (Czech Republic). It was an easy win for Jeremy and Lukas
as they sailed into the semi finals with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
The last quarterfinal of the day for the men’s doubles team is still to be played between the team of Andrey Kuznetsov and Teymuraz Gabashvili, and the team of Dmitry Tursunov and Igor Kunitsyn. All four players hailing from Russia
have the home court advantage, making this match an exciting and nail-biting event. A must see for all tennis lovers out there. Though one thing is for sure; at the end of the day it is a Motherland’s victory.
It was an important day for men’s singles since all but one spot for the quarterfinals were decided. Two matches were played in the central court. The first match was played between Andrey Golubev (Kazakhistan) and Igor Kunitsyn
(Russia). The Russian player making most of the home court advantage was victorious over his opponent defeating him with a set score of 6-4, 7-5.
The second match was Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (France) vs. Viktor Troicki (Serbia), results of which are still awaited. The winner of this match will face Horacio Zeballos from Argentina. Horacio defeated Victor Crivoi from Romania earlier
in the day by 7-5, 7-6, 7-1.
The third quarterfinal qualifying match was played between Ukrainian players Sergiy Stackhovsky and Alexandr Dolgopolov. Alexandr defeated his countryman by 6-2, 7-6, 7-4. He will face Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus in the quarterfinal
match later in the event. The last qualifying match for the day was between Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan and Paul-Henri Mathieu from France. Even though Denis lost the first set 1-6 he managed to make a comeback and won the next two sets 7-5, 6-3 securing
a spot for himself in the quarterfinals.
All in all, the day was an exciting day for tennis fans in Russia and across the world. With two spots decided for the semi finals in the men’s double, it’s easier for the fans to predict who might win the title. Also in the men’s
singles category, with Igor Kunitsyn winning his match today Russian fans can breathe a little easy since they are not out of the running yet. If he manages to make the most of the home court advantage he might still grab the title and make it a Russian win.
