Kremlin Cup 2010: Thursday women’s matches review
As Thursday’s play draws to a close a lot of important results in the women’s category for both singles and doubles matches were seen. Out of the 16 matches scheduled for the day; there were 4 doubles and 4 singles matches; all
of which have been completed.
The four women’s doubles matches scheduled for the day were quarterfinals. With all four completed for the day we now have the teams that will be playing in the semi finals. The first quarterfinal was between the teams of Akgul
Amanmuradova (Uzbekistan)/ Darya Kustova (Belarus) and Olga Govortsova (Belarus)/ Alla Kudryavtseva (Russia). Akgul and Darya dominated the court and secured an easy win over Olga and Alla by 6-2, 6-3.
The second quarterfinal was between the pair of Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) and Maria Kirilenko (Russia), and the Russian pair of Vera Dushevina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. This match was the most exciting event of the day with
three of the four players having home advantage. However, the Belarusian element proved to be an edge over the Russian team and Victoria-Maria won the game by 6-2, 6-4.
The third quarterfinal of the day was between the team of Vitalia Diatchenko (Russia) and Tatiana Poutchek (Belarus), and the team of Sara Errani (Italy) and Maria Martinez Sanchez (Spain). The Sara-Maria pair had sailed through
their qualifying match with the set score of 6-1, 6-3. As predicted the pair maintained their performance and excellent on-court coordination, winning the game with set scores of 6-1, 7-5. Although Vitalia and Tatiana tried to make a comeback in the second
set they were unable to make any breakthrough and ultimately lost the game to Sara and Maria. Sara and Maria will face Akgul and Darya in the semi finals later in the cup.
The last quarterfinal of the day was between the Romanian pair of Alexandra Dulgheru and Monica Niculescu, and the team of Gisela Dulko (Argentina) and Flavia Pennetta (Italy). It was an easy win for the Romanian pair as they dominated
the court and allowed no breathing space to their opponents. They won the match by 6-1, 6-1. The Romanian team will face Victoria and Maria in the second semi final of the cup.
Four women’s singles matches from the main draw were also scheduled for the day. First match of the day was Katreyna Bondarenko (Ukraine) vs. Maria Kirilenko (Russia). The Russian embarrassed her opponent on the court with a 6-0,
6-0 win.
The second matchup of the day was Jelena Jankovic (Serbia) vs. Zarina Diyas (Kazakhistan). The Kazakh had an easy win with a 6-1, 6-2 score securing a spot for herself in the quarterfinals.
The other two matches of the day were: Anna Chakvetadze (Russia) vs. Mariya Koryttseva (Ukraine) and Vera Dushevina (Russia) vs. Elena Vesnina (Russia). It was a Russian win in both matches as Anna and Vera sailed into the quarterfinals
with a respective set score of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-2
It was a better day for the Russian women than the Russian men as most of the victories of the day go to the Russian players in both the singles and the doubles categories.
