Krista Hardebeck, Madison Keys proceed to the semi-final – AEGON International 2011: Girls’ Singles
Krista Hardebeck defeats Daneika Borthwick 6-3, 6-2
Krista Hardebeck of USA cruised past Daneika Borthwick of Great Britain in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of Girls’ singles event at the AEGON International in Eastbourne on Friday. The American took an hour and seventeen minutes to undo her opponent.
Hardebeck and Borthwick broke each other on a number of occasions in the first set. Six of the nine service games were broken in the opening set. However, it was Hardebeck who grabbed four of the six breaks of serve and won the set 6-3.
Both players were erratic with the second serve. However, Borthwick was finding too much difficulty in putting her second serve inside the court as he committed a horrible seven double faults in the first set. Hardebeck delivered 65 percent of the first serves, clinching 60 percent of the points on them. The American converted four of the nine break points she created on Borthwick’s serve and saved five of the seven break points on her own serve in the opening set.
Hardebeck carried the winning momentum into the second set and allowed the British to win just two games, claiming the set 6-2. The American kept her first serve percentage at 57 percent, converting just 33 percent of the first serves into points in the second set.
Hardebeck is drawn to play compatriot Victoria Duval in the semi-finals.
Madison Keys beats Lucy Brown 7-5, 6-1
Another American Madison Keys reached the semi-finals as she defeated Lucy Brown of Great Britain in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. The match lasted for an hour and sixteen minutes.
Keys and Brown broke each other twice in the first ten games, squaring off the score at 5-5. The American broke her opponent in the twelfth game to win the set 7-5.
Keys hit three aces and 52 percent of the first serves, sealing 57 percent of the points on them. The American grabbed 44 percent of the first return points in the opening set. Keys won three of the seven break points she received on Brown’s serve and saved four of the six break points she faced on her own serve in the first set.
In the second set, the American crushed Brown, dropping only one game and breaking the British twice to clinch the set 6-1.
Keys delivered a single ace and 55 percent of the first serves, capturing 83 percent of the points on them in the second set. The American capitalised on both break point opportunities she created on Brown’s serve and did not face any break point on her own serve in the second set.
Keys is slated to meet Francesca Stephenson of Great Britain in the semi-finals.
