Kristian Gkolomeev conquers Boys 50m freestyle semi-final meet – 3rd World Junior Championships
Kristian Gkolomeev of Greece conquered the top qualification spot of the Boys 50m freestyle semi-final on the third day of the 2011 Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA) supervised 3rd World Junior Championships on Thursday, August 18, in Lima, Peru.
The 18-year-old Gkolomeev, who acquired second position in the preliminary rounds of the 50m event, geared up his swim and acquired top qualification spot, with a timing of 22.69 seconds. His time was just 0.32 seconds above the championship mark of 22.37
seconds, made by Orinoco Faamausili of New Zealand, in 2008. His effort was 1.76 seconds slower than the world mark of 20.91 seconds, set by Cesar Cielo Filho of Brazil at the 2009 World Championships.
He was followed by Cameron McEvoy of Australia, who remained only 0.03 seconds behind him and clocked a time of 22.72 seconds. McEvoy was in a lead of 0.23 seconds over his following competitor, Luke Peddie of Canada, who touched the finishing wall and submitted
a third fastest effort of 22.95 seconds.
Peddie was chased by Volodymyr Sushchyk of Ukraine, who failed to overwhelm the third position holder’s effort with margin of 0.02 seconds, as Sushchyk reported in a time of 22.97 seconds for fourth qualification. A Martinez Rodriguez of Spain was the fifth
position holder of the event, as he stayed just 0.09 seconds away and ended his swim in a time of 23.06 seconds.
Meanwhile, Clement Mignon of France was the sixth finest swimmer to qualify for the final round, as her posted a time of 23.18 seconds. Mignon was 0.12 seconds faster than Simonas Bilis of Lithuania, who clocked a seventh best qualifying time of 23.30 seconds.
Bilis was trailed by Reynard Wessels of South Africa, who was also 0.12 seconds slower than his preceding swimmer but managed to make his way to the final round, by posting a time of 23.42 seconds.
Furthermore, the arena enjoyed the furious efforts of all participants, while these finalists will compete with each other in the next round to reach the podium.
