Kristina Barrois defeats Sofia Arvidsson; cruises into the second round of the Estoril Open
29-year-old German Kristina Barrois trashed 27-year-old Swede Sofia Arvidsson with a breadstick on Tuesday. She registered a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the Swede to advance into the second round of the 2011 Estoril Open, a clay court
tournament, in Oeiras, Portugal.
Ranked 71st in the WTA Premier rankings, Barrois hasn’t had much progress since the start of this season though she made a quarter-final berth at Stuttgart before entering at Estoril Court Central.
She downed the Swede, ranked 18 places down her, in straight sets in just sixty-two minutes. Barrois lost to her on her last two meetings against Arvidsson but she lowered the trail in their head to head series by 1-2 after this
victory.
Barrois showed awe-inspiring skills throughout the match and dominated all over the court. In the opening set, she held her serve in the first game plausible and later with her awesome agility, the German kept her entire serves
easily. She found five breakpoint opportunities and converted one to her advantage in the eighth game to clinch the set with an assuring 6-3 score line.
The German raised her level of game in the final set as she broke Arvidsson’s serve in the very first game. She then reeled off next three games in a row to extend her lead by 4-0. Barrois lost her serve in the fifth game but snatched
the break back in the proceeding game to eventually seal the set with a breadstick.
She produced an awesome first serve share of 95 percent as compared to the Swede’s 64 percent in the second set. The German earned a convincing 60 percent win on it and converted all four breakpoints to her advantage to help her
clinch easily.
She will next face sixth seeded Russian Elena Vesnina who slew Portuguese Barbara Luz with double breadsticks.
The 24-year-old trashed 17-year-old Luz in just under forty-three minutes to advance into the second round. The Russian failed to save the only breakpoint faced but converted six out of seven breakpoint opportunities to her advantage
to clinch the match with an awesome 6-1, 6-1 score line.
