Kristina Barrois upsets Virginie Razzano to progress into the main round – BNP Paribas Open 2012
German veteran, 30-years-old Kristina Barrois squashed a two year younger contestant from France, Virginie Razzano, to book a berth in the main round of the BNP Paribas Open. It was supposed to be an enthralling battle but it turned
out to be a one-sided show from the inferior ranked German. She dumped her opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in just over an hour and
Both players had competed against one another on two previous occasions and Razzano was the victorious in both matches. She won the opening round of the same tournament two years ago and defeated the German in the qualifiers of
the Dubai Duty Free Championships in the last month.
World number 92, Razzano, started the match in pathetic fashion; lost the opening serve game and trailed 0-2. She did her best to win a break back but wasn’t able to perform the heroics. However, she managed to hold on to her serves
in the following games to keep the trail to just one breakpoint. Scores moved to 5-3 with the German looking great especially with her forehand down the line winners.
Razzano served to stay in the match but only won a couple of points before dropping another game as well as the set. Barrois won 32 points compared to just 26 of her opponent and went on to accomplish an upset.
The second set was not much different apart from a sloppy start. Both players hung on to their serves to begin the proceedings. Razzano looked a bit worn out as well and once again went down with a trail of two games after losing
a serve game; scores were 1-3 at that stage.
Nothing changed for the French, who was not in a mood to fight it out and prolong the match further into the third set. It was just a matter of time before Barrois registered a triumph and after a couple of serve holds at each
ends, Barrois marched on into the main round of the contest.
It was not an entertaining battle at all with Razzano failing to create an impact. She was not working hard for her points and was putting forth a half-hearted effort. A sizeable crowd was left dejected at the arena. They came
across to witness two experienced players in action; battling it out for a spot but only witnessed a one-sided encounter.
Barrois plays Aravane Rezai of France in the first round.
