Kristina Gavnholt crushes Arundhati Pantawane to lift Women’s Singles crown at Czech International
Czech Republic’s Kristina Gavnholt proved her superiority by grabbing the Women’s Singles title after crushing India’s Arundhati Pantawane in the final of the 2011 Czech International, in Czech Republic, on Sunday, October 2.
Gavnholt has been playing tremendous badminton for the last couple of months and the shuttler delivered a fabulous performance against Pantawane in the final show down of the event. World Number 60 ranked player, Gavnholt, showed no mercy to the Indian and
clinched the title by ending the match in two sets of just 40 minutes.
In the first game, the local shuttler cheered the home crowd with her remarkable start as she played positive and fast badminton against the nervous Indian, who failed to cope up with the accuracy, anticipation and speed of her opponent. Until the interval
in the opening set of the match, Gavnholt was miles ahead of Pantawane at 11-5.
After the break, Pantawane played aggressive badminton but failed to break the momentum of her rival who was in complete control of the game. Gavnholt remained on the winning track and finished the opening set in just 16 minutes with a surprising 21-10 score
on the board.
The second game of the match was wonderful as both sides entertained the crowd by displaying their incredible skills and remained close until the 60-minute rest. The Indian was just behind the home shuttler at 10-11.
After the break, Kristina employed a different strategy and kept the bird low by executing strong pushes and smashes. Her accurate execution of strokes helped her to win the second set in 24 minutes with the margin of 21-18. The end result of this straight-set
final match was 21-10 and 21-18.
After the match, Kristina said, “I knew that I had to be fast on court today against Pantawane and I knew that if I controlled the net and attacked with fast stick smashes that I could beat her and it worked. I was so good to do this in front of my friends
and family and the support here has been great for me all week.”
Victory in the home event will boost Kristina’s confidence and will help her in performing well in upcoming international events.
