Kristopher Gilchrist claims Men’s 100m breast-stroke title - British Gas ASA National Championships
Kristopher Gilchrist claimed the title of the Men’s 100m breast-stroke category on the initial day of the 2011 British Gas ASA Long Course National Championships, being held in Sheffield.
The British Championships is a trial selection of swimmers to attain their qualification into the national team for the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July.
Edinburgh University’s Gilchrist captured the title of the Men’s 100m breast-stroke event with a stupendous effort of 1 minute and 00.99 seconds. Daniel Sliwinski and Richard Webb followed him on the podium for the silver and bronze medal, by posting a time
of 1:01.15 and 1:02.15 seconds, respectively.
Gilchrist won a gold medal in the 200m breast-stroke at the 2008 Manchester World Short Course Championships. He also represented Britain at the 2006 Budapest Long Course Championships, where he won a bronze medal in the 200m event.
He completed his first-half of the race in a fastest time of 28.59 seconds, staying almost one second ahead of his closest competitor, Sliwinski. Sliwinski and Webb followed him on the finishing wall, by concluding their first laps with timings of 29.20
and 29.44 seconds, respectively. The swimmers sustained their spots in the second lap, where Gilchrist maintained a slight lead of 0.16 seconds over Sliwinski, to obtain the gold medal.
Russell Smith of Stockport followed them on the finishing wall as the fourth fastest swimmer, with a timing of 1 minute and 02.35 seconds. He was followed by Matt Shead, who completed his swim in the fifth place by posting a time of 1 minute and 02.50 seconds.
Shead was followed by Christopher Steeples and Craig Elliot, who finished their swim in the sixth and seventh fastest spots, with timings of 1:02.70 and 1:03.37 minutes, respectively.
The eight spot of the category went to Tom Rooke, who finished his swim in the last place, reporting in a time of 1 minute and 04.59 seconds.
The swimmers will continue participating with each other for the next three days, as the championships are set to conclude on June 17.
