Kristyna Pliskova slithers past Arina Rodionova into the main draw – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Kristyna Pliskova of Czech Republic made it to the end of a roller coaster match, and progressed to the first round of 2011 Wimbledon Championships, after dismissing Arina Rodionova of Russia in a three-set marathon 4-6, 6-3, 6-2,
to make her way into the first round of Wimbledon, being played here at the All England Lawn and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, England.
Rodionova seemed to be in the fine fettle, coming into the match, and she was undoubtedly the quickest coming out of the blocks. Known as one of the finest players on tour, Rodionova was striking the ball with extraordinary depth,
and her Czech adversary looked totally off-balance and bereft of ideas. The equally-talented Czech was actually not playing that bad, but actually it was the mercurial Rodionova, who was proving too difficult to be handled, and pinching the first set quickly.
However, the Czech player displayed her versatility as a competitive tennis player and instantly switched over her tactics on serve. Adopting a stalwart serve-and-volley approach, Pliskova began to hold more comfortably and hung
tight at 3-3. Suddenly, the match was all square as the Czech player managed to pull off the decisive break granted to her by the Russian. Her new approach started to work out for her and playing a trick at the right time she managed to bamboozle the Russian
with a 6-3 score.
The Russian tennis ace looked dejected and weary at the start of the decider as it was at the back of her mind that the same feat could recur. The momentum seemed to have swung, but hats off to the woman from Tambov as she extremely
dug deep to stay in contention and cut the deficit to 2-2. But true to Rodionova’s fear, the 21-year-old Rodionova did not have it all her way, as Pliskova raced into a 6-2 lead with some more attacking and hard-hitting display of tennis. Pliskova dug deep
and was resolute in winning the four games in a row to keep her Wimbledon hopes alive.
Pliskova, who has been given the wildcard into the tournament, now marches on into the first round of the tournament. With this win, the Czech tennis ace has refined her year-to-date win/loss mark to 17-14 matches and will be looking
forward to maintain her shrewdness in the up-coming matches at the tournament.
