Kristyna Pliskova stuns Eleni Daniilidou in round one – AEGON Trophy 2012 CH
Czech starlet, Kristyna Pliskova, battled through the Grecian superstar, Eleni Daniilidou, in the opening round of AEGON Trophy in Nottingham. On Tuesday, the Czech booming professional who is just 20-year-old edged past in straight
sets 7-6(9), 6-4.
The opening round witnessed a tight battle between the two players. Despite some nervy occurrences for both players, no breakthroughs were seen throughout the set. The 29-year-old Grecian was the first to be tested in the fourth
game of the match when she saved a breakpoint to hold serve. She tried to exert pressure on her rival in the following game but only managed to grab a couple of points. She was again under the cosh in the eighth game but did well to hold her opponent and won
the game from deuce.
No more drama was seen on the grass courts of Nottingham and the opening set entered the tie-breaker round. Pliskova took an early mini-break but squandered the lead right at the verge of winning the set. However, she smashed an
amazing winner to finally put an end to a gruelling matchup. Technically, the Czech had won the set but apparently there was no winner to be honest, it was just a matter of luck.
Start to the second set witnessed another see-saw battle between the two players. However, the 150th ranked Czech grabbed an early breakthrough in the fifth game that proved to be the deciding point of the set. World
number 69, Daniilidou, couldn’t win a single point on her rival’s serve instead got in trouble in the seventh game when she was forced to save a breakpoint to stay in the match. Things never worked out for the Grecian superstar and the match kept drifting
away especially after she failed to post any score on the Pliskova’s serve.
It was a good result for the in-form booming Czech beauty queen who failed to reach the main round of the Roland Garros French Open after disappointingly falling to an inferior ranked rival. However, this is her chance to get in
the form. Next up for her is the British wildcard entrant, Tara Moore.
