Krystian Kymerson and Cesar Aguiar kick-off Burton Toyota Pro with successful Round 1 heats
Brazil’s Krystian Kymerson and Cesar Aguiar kicked off their skirmish at the 6-Star Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Burton Toyota Pro at Newcastle’s Surfest with an ideal result in their Round 1 heats that went down at Merewether Beach in New
South Wales, Australia, on Monday, March 12.
Both the surfers advanced through into Round 2 (Round of 96) of the event, accompanied by Brazil’s Filipe Toledo and Australia’s Dean Bowen who took first runner-up position in the first and second heat respectively.
The tricky three-foot waves breaking at Merewether Point on Monday welcomed the surfers to the latest event of the World Qualifying Series (WQS), offering them an opportunity to secure a handsome prize cheque along with coveted ASP rating points.
Exhibiting a huge amount of skill and determination, Kymerson took down Toledo, South Africa’s Brandon Jackson and Australia’s Connor O’Leary in the first heat of Round 1 to advance through into the second round.
The Brazilian surfer locked his first business-wave to post a 7.33 on the score-board and backed it up with an exquisite 8.00-point wave to finish with a decisive heat-total of 15.33 points.
Toledo put on a pretty impressive show for the crowd as well, beginning his charge in the opening minutes of the battle to score a 6.33 off his first business-wave and adding an additional 7.57 points to his account in the dying minutes of the heat to finish
with a heat-total of 13.90 points.
Jackson and O’Leary got eliminated from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 13.30 and 12.53 points respectively.
The second heat saw Aguiar prevail over his fellow countryman Charlie Brown, Australia’s Bowen and his fellow countryman Jake Sylvester to confidently make his way into the second round.
Aguiar got off to a slow start, but gradually built momentum to collect a couple of waves in the five-point range, finishing with a heat-total of 11.70 points.
Bowen successfully extended his life in the event as well with his second-place finish, courtesy of his heat-total of 9.30 points that included a couple of 4.17-point waves.
Brown and Sylvester were forced to make a premature exit from the competition after scoring a heat-total of 8.93 and 8.83 points respectively.
