Krystian Kymerson and Filipe Toledo clinch victory in Round 3 at Mr Price Pro Ballito – Surfing news
Brazil’s Krystian Kymerson and Brazil’s Filipe Toledo successfully advanced directly to Round 5 (Round of 16) at the Mr Price Pro Ballito, stop no.3 of 8 on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime calendar, after walking away with top honours
from their respective Round 3 (no-loser Round of 24) heats that took place at Ballito, South Africa, on Thursday, July 4, 2013.
Kymerson secured his place in the fifth round by getting the better of Australia’s Mitch Crews and New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand during the seventh heat, thus pushing both his rivals into the relegation round, i.e. Round 4 (Round of 24).
Toledo, on the other hand, qualified to Round 5 by claiming a victory over Hawaii’s Mason Ho and Brazil’s Jean Da Silva in heat 8, sending both his rivals into the relegation round in the process.
The opportunity was there for the exciting surfing talent from around the world to put their power-surfing and tube-riding skills on display, as the clean, one-metre barrelling waves breaking at Ballito created a perfect canvas for such manoeuvres.
Kymerson, who had been quite impressive during the previous rounds, continued to exhibit a solid form during the seventh heat of Round 3, which had him pitted against Crews and Stairmand in a battle for direct place in Round 5.
As the battle got underway, the Brazilian talent got off to a relatively slow start, but eventually managed to break free of the shackles with a 7.90-point ride half-way through the heat. He soon backed it up with a 6.90-point ride, which took him to a heat-total
of 14.80 points. The score kept him in the lead until the end to seal the fate of the battle in his favour.
Crews put on an impressive performance, but his efforts turned out to be in vain eventually. The Australian surfer only managed to get to a heat-total of 13.67 points, which was inadequate under the current circumstances.
Stairmand also put on a determined performance, but eventually had to settle for a two-wave total of 13.24 points, thus getting forced to settle for third place.
The final heat of Round 3 saw Toledo walk away with the win. The Brazilian surfer had gotten off to a solid start, earning a 6.33 off his first business-wave, but struggled to find another decent score for most part of the heat. In the dying minutes of the
battle, however, he managed to collect a 6.30-point ride, thus getting to a heat-total of 12.63 points.
Ho registered a two-wave total of 10.50 points, while Da Silva only managed to get to a heat-total of 1.38 points. Both the surfers consequently found themselves relegated to the fourth round.
